The Hawaii County Office of Aging is warning residents to be wary of phone calls in which a person not affiliated with the office requests an elderly person’s Social Security number.

The Hawaii County Office of Aging is warning residents to be wary of phone calls in which a person not affiliated with the office requests an elderly person’s Social Security number.

The caller falsely claims to be an agent with the Office of Aging, according to the county, which noted the office does not call and request such information. The caller, who tells people the phone number was obtained from AARP, offers certain benefits in return for the person’s Social Security number.

Residents who receive such a phone call are cautioned not to provide any personal information, including Social Security, credit card and financial account numbers, according to the office. Instead, residents should contact the Hawaii Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311.
